Beats & Rhymes

Grades 3, 4 and 5 are exploring the world of hip-hop and writing lyrics. Students created their own verses and experimented with rhythm and rhymes to make their lyrics flow.

For inspiration, we watched music videos of young artists in the hip-hop world. Check out these links to hear the “Beats & Rhymes” kids crew from Minnesota!

Today in my music technology class, my friends and I performed a cover of a song from Sesame Street. Below, you will find the original video and the cover we recorded in class. While you are watching, think about:

  1. What did we learn through this experience?
  2. In what ways were we able to be creative?

Vitamin String Quartet

If you have access to a computer, tablet, iPad, iPhone, please research Vitamin String Quartet. This group of musicians that perform cover songs, or a performance of a song originally made by someone else. I find this group to be so amazing because they play popular music on stringed instruments: Violin, Viola, and Cello.

Things to think about investigate while you listen:

  • What is a quartet? What makes this group a string quartet?
  • Compare/contrast the different instruments. How are they similar? How are they different?
  • How can something like this happen? What do the musicians need to learn before they can perform songs like this?

There are hundreds of recordings made by the Vitamin String Quartet available on YouTube, iTunes and Spotify.

Hello from Potsdam!

Hello! I am writing to you from Potsdam, New York. Potsdam is a town in northern New York state. It would take you eight hours to drive from your house to Potsdam! That’s longer than an entire day in school!

Can you find Potsdam the map of New York? New York State is a part of the United States of America – our country. It is also close to a different country. What different country is Potsdam close to? You might need to do some research to find out…

I am here taking classes that help me grow as a teacher. Even teachers still want to learn…can you believe it? 😉

I wanted to share a video with you of two musicians playing the theme from the video game Super Mario Brothers. They are playing the marimba. While you are watching and listening, investigate:

  • Is the marimba similar (same, just like) to our xylophones?
  • Is it different?
  • What kinds of skills do these musicians have? What are they good at? Be specific!
  • What do you think these musicians needed to master before they performed this song? How did they need to prepare?
